artificial intelligence
I keep a public log of articles about artificial intelligence (AI) on the net. That list is most likely more up-to-date than what's found on this page, from a news perspective.
In 2023, I wrote AI vs human life, a blog post where I contrasted the speed at which AI is developing with the need for guardrails against the possible destruction of humanity. A little thing like that.
Today, late 2024, I don't see AI really progressing much, apart from insane purchases by major companies that try to profit from something that burns money.
I'm not a luddite nor opposed to benefits of AI use. I am, on the other hand, very much opposed against capitalist companies that run for-profit amok. AI is a serious threat against the climate, at the very least.
I recently heard an enthralling quote that Brian Merchant retold in Ed Zitron's podcast Better Offline[^1] which says much about how people magically think about artificial intelligence; I'll go through what I mean by that after the quote:
AI, and indeed all statistical methods of prediction, is intrinsically conservative because if what you're doing is predicting what should happen next based on what already happened, what you're doing is [...] driving a future that looks like the past. So, think of it this way: if you [write] 'Hey', an [autocomplete based on previous searches automatically] adds 'darling'. Because that's what you type every time. You might want to write 'Hey, asshole', but it wants you to type 'Hey, darling'. Now, if you type something you've never typed before, it's gonna pick the thing that most people say. So, you're either going to get statistically average version of you used to be or the statistically average version of who everyone is. There is something intrinsically and inseparably conservative about the project of making the future look like the past.
In my mind, this is less the de-personification of everything made by humans, and more like a magic eightball. God is not in the machine.
